Usually, yes—but it depends on what kind of tow ball/coupler you have.
For a conventional steel tow ball that sits inside a trailer coupler, a light coating of grease on the ball is generally recommended.
It:
Reduces friction between the ball and coupler
Helps prevent wear and galling
Protects the ball from rust
Makes coupling/uncoupling smoother
However: some modern couplers are specifically designed to run dry, and certain manufacturers recommend not greasing them. Check the coupler manufacturer's instructions if you know the model.
